Derek joined Hempel in 2023, bringing over 26 years of professional experience in the real estate & property management industry to the company. He is a highly respected and accomplished executive with extensive expertise in all aspects of property management including Commercial (Office, Retail, Industrial, Warehouse, Medical, etc.), Land Development assets as well as Residential (single family homes, multifamily complexes, associations, etc.). He is dynamic, energetic and highly experienced with a solid history of professional success, including oversight of multimillion-dollar properties & large-scale portfolios. He is a steadfast leader and mentor with a proven track record of steering improvement projects, building & guiding top-performing management & leasing teams, and optimizing internal operations. He has a talent for cultivating, galvanizing & maintaining relationships with stakeholders, tenants, vendors and management teams, effectively leading to high occupancy & renewal rates, minimizing turn rates & operating costs and providing financial insight to maximize returns for investors.

A native and current resident of Minneapolis, Derek attended Minneapolis Southwest HS and graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a B.A. in Business Management. He attained the LEED AP & CMCA designations and holds a Real Estate License in Minnesota. Past accomplishments include selection as a MADACS Awards Judge, 2017 CIC Midwest Sustainability Partnership Award Winner. Mr. Hennen is the former chair of BOMA St. Paul’s Energy & environment Committee and Brokers Group and served as NARPM MN Chapter President in 2022. He currently is an active industry member of CAI, MHA, NARPM, BOMA & IREM.

After work, Derek spends his time serving his local church and volunteers with People Serving People, Feed My Starving Children and the Animal Humane Society & Sanctuaries. He also is a member of the Minneapolis Athletic Club’s Business Round Table. A former founder & 3-time captain of his High School Rugby team at Southwest HS leading them to win 3 consecutive undefeated state championships and 2 national championships. He also enjoys golf, travel, working out at Lifetime Fitness Edina, basketball, football, rugby, hockey, tennis, pickleball, hiking, reading, boating, kayaking, camping, skiing, cooking, vineyards & apple orchards, Latin dancing attending live music venues, comedy shows and spending quality time with family & friends.
